Product Description

Product Overview

Material-first engineering for sterilization-critical applications

This range of PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone) medical device housings is engineered from a high-performance amorphous thermoplastic chosen for one reason: it survives what ordinary plastics cannot. PPSU combines outstanding toughness, high-temperature resistance and broad chemical compatibility with excellent optical clarity in its natural amber tone — the ideal housing material for surgical instruments, diagnostic devices, sterilizable enclosures and fluid-handling equipment.

Each housing is CNC-machined from solid medical-grade PPSU stock, allowing us to hold tight tolerances on fine features — seal grooves, optical windows, threaded ports and thin walls — without the tooling cost and lead time of injection moulding. This makes it equally suited to rapid prototyping and low-to-mid volume production.

AnnotationMaterial is the differentiator here: PPSU outperforms polycarbonate and standard polysulfone in impact strength and hydrolysis resistance, while offering far better clarity than opaque engineering resins such as PEEK.

Material Highlight — PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone)

Why we machine this part from PPSU

Property Typical Value Why It Matters
Density ≈ 1.29 g/cm³ Lightweight yet rigid housing
Tensile Strength ≈ 70 MPa Withstands mechanical stress & drop impact
Flexural Modulus ≈ 2,400 MPa Dimensional stability under load
HDT @ 1.82 MPa ≈ 207 °C Survives steam autoclave (134 °C) repeatedly
Continuous Use Temp. Up to 180 °C Safe for hot sterilization & disinfection cycles
Sterilization Compatibility Steam · Gamma · EtO · Plasma No yellowing, cracking or property loss
Chemical Resistance Excellent (acids, bases, lipids) Safe with disinfectants & body fluids
Optical Appearance Amber / honey transparent Visual inspection windows & fluid monitoring
Biocompatibility USP Class VI · ISO 10993 Approved for patient-contact applications
Key PointPPSU is one of the few transparent thermoplastics that can be steam-autoclaved 1,000+ times without cracking or losing clarity — a decisive advantage for reusable medical housings.

Dimensions & Machining Specifications

Reference build — dimensions are indicative and fully customizable to your drawing

Feature Reference Size Note
Overall Housing (L * W * H) ≈ 120 * 80 * 45 mm Scalable to your target device
Wall Thickness 2.0 – 3.0 mm Balanced strength / weight
Optical Window Thickness ≈ 1.5 mm Polished for clarity
Dimensional Tolerance ± 0.02 mm (critical ± 0.01 mm) CNC-controlled
Surface Finish Ra 0.4 – 1.6 µm Optical polish available
Seal / O-ring Groove Precision-cut Leak-tight fluid sealing
Threads & Ports M2 – M12, NPT / metric Custom tappings per print
Tolerance NotePPSU has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, so tight tolerances stay stable across sterilization temperature swings — critical for parts that must re-seal after every autoclave cycle.

Key Components & Their Advantages

Where the engineering value lives

Main Housing Body

Machined from solid PPSU with a rigid, ergonomic shell that resists impact and repeated handling.

✔ Advantage: high impact strength → fewer damaged units in clinical use.

Optical Inspection Window

Integrated transparent section, optically polished to monitor fluids or indicators.

✔ Advantage: clarity retained after 1,000+ sterilizations.

Precision Seal Grooves

CNC-cut O-ring channels maintain a leak-tight barrier against liquids and gases.

✔ Advantage: ±0.01 mm control prevents leakage & pressure loss.

Threaded Ports & Connectors

Custom-machined threaded interfaces for tubing, sensors or fasteners.

✔ Advantage: strong, reusable threads — no stripping under torque.

Machining Features & Capabilities

Capability Detail
Processes CNC turning, 3/4/5-axis milling, drilling, tapping, thread milling
Complex Geometry Thin walls, deep pockets, undercuts, contoured profiles
Surface Treatments Optical polishing, vapour polishing, media blasting, matte/gloss finishing
Quality Control CMM dimensional inspection, first-article report, full traceability

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PPSU, and why is it chosen for medical device housings?

PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone) is a high-performance amorphous thermoplastic offering exceptional toughness, high-temperature resistance (continuous use up to 180 °C) and excellent optical clarity. It is biocompatible (USP Class VI / ISO 10993) and resists thousands of sterilization cycles, making it a benchmark material for reusable medical housings and surgical instruments.

How many sterilization cycles can these PPSU housings withstand?

PPSU is engineered to withstand 1,000+ steam autoclave cycles at 134 °C without cracking, discoloration or loss of mechanical properties. It is also compatible with gamma, EtO and plasma sterilization, giving you flexibility across hospital protocols.

What tolerances and surface finishes can you achieve?

Standard dimensional tolerance is ±0.02 mm, with ±0.01 mm on critical features. Surface finishes range from Ra 0.4 to 1.6 µm, and we offer optical polishing for transparent windows and fluid-viewing sections.

Can you machine other materials besides PPSU?

Yes. We machine the full range of engineering plastics — including PEEK, PEI (Ultem™), PC, PMMA, POM, PTFE and nylon — as well as aluminum and stainless steel. We can also assist in selecting the optimal material for your specific application.

What file formats, lead times and MOQ do you accept?

We accept STEP, IGES, STL and 2D PDF/DWG drawings. Prototypes are typically delivered within 5–10 working days, with low MOQ for custom projects. Provide your drawings and target quantity for an accurate quotation.
