CNC Machined Transmission Shafts

Product Description
Custom Drive Shaft with Side Holes | CNC Machined Transmission Shafts

Product Overview

This drive shaft with side holes is a precision transmission component featuring radially cross-drilled holes used for coupling pins, locking set screws, shear pins or lubrication channels. The shaft transmits torque between connected assemblies while the side holes provide positive mechanical locking and easy service access.

The core of this product is its material and processing quality. We machine from certified steel bar stock — carbon steel, alloy steel or stainless — and hold side-hole position accuracy within ±0.05 mm, diameter tolerances down to ±0.01 mm and run-out within 0.02 mm. Side holes are deburred and chamfered so pins seat cleanly and the hole edges resist stress cracking.

Key differentiator: Cross-drilling is where most shafts fail — hole position drift, burrs and stress risers. We fixture, drill and chamfer each side hole precisely, then inspect its location and diameter before shipment.

Reference Dimensions & Side-Hole Configuration

The table below shows representative drive-shaft configurations with side holes. All diameters, lengths and hole positions are fully customizable — send us your drawing and we machine to your exact geometry.

Model Shaft Diameters (D1/D2) Total Length Side Holes Other Features Typical Use
DS-01 Ø12 / Ø20 mm 150 mm (est.) 2 × Ø5 mm cross-drilled Keyway, M8 thread Small drive coupling
DS-02 Ø16 / Ø25 mm 220 mm (est.) 4 × Ø6 mm radial holes Spline, retaining groove PTO drive
DS-03 Ø20 / Ø30 mm 300 mm (est.) 2 × Ø8 mm through holes Ground journals, keyway Transmission shaft
DS-04 Ø25 / Ø40 mm 420 mm (est.) 6 × Ø8 mm cross-drilled Threaded ends, spline Heavy-duty drive
Tolerance note: Dimensions are indicative estimates. Side-hole positions are held within ±0.05 mm, diameter fits within ±0.01 mm (turned) or ±0.005 mm (ground). Final values confirmed against your drawing.

Key Features & Highlighted Advantages

Side Holes

Precision Cross-Drilled Holes

Radial holes are jig-located to ±0.05 mm and chamfered on both ends, giving pins and set screws a clean, crack-free seat for reliable torque lock.

Torque

Splines & Keyways

CNC-hobbed splines and milled keyways with tight width tolerance transfer high torque without backlash or key deformation.

Bearing Fit

Ground Journal Diameters

Bearing seats are cylindrical-ground to h6/g6 fits, Ra 0.4 µm for smooth rotation, low vibration and long service life.

Alignment

True-Running Shank

Centre-ground shaft body with ≤0.02 mm run-out keeps connected components perfectly aligned at speed.

Strength

Heat-Treated Core

Optional carburizing, induction hardening or nitriding delivers a hard wear surface over a tough, shock-resistant core.

Corrosion & Finish

Plated / Stainless Surface

Stainless grades or zinc / nickel / chrome plating resist corrosion and wear, with polishing available for a premium finish.

Materials We Can Process

Beyond carbon and alloy steel, our turning, drilling and milling lines handle a broad portfolio of materials, so the shaft can be matched to strength, corrosion, weight or cost requirements.

Category Materials Typical Use
Carbon / Alloy Steel 1045, 40Cr, 42CrMo, 20CrMnTi High-strength drive shafts
Stainless Steel 304, 316, 303, 17-4PH Corrosion-resistant shafts
Non-Ferrous Metals Brass H59/H62, Aluminum 6061/7075, Copper Lightweight / conductive parts
Exotic Metals Titanium, Tool Steel, Hardened Alloy High-wear / high-load applications
Engineering Plastics POM, Nylon (PA), PEEK, PTFE, ABS Light-duty, non-magnetic parts

FAQ — 5 Frequently Asked Questions

1. What material is the drive shaft made of, and can it be customized?
The default material is 1045 carbon steel or 40Cr alloy steel, but the shaft is fully customizable — we also machine 42CrMo, 20CrMnTi, stainless steel 304/316, brass, aluminum and titanium. Choose based on your torque, wear and corrosion requirements, and we will recommend the best grade.
2. What are the standard dimensions, and can you produce custom sizes?
Our reference range covers shafts from roughly Ø12 mm to Ø40 mm, with lengths from 150 mm to 420 mm, and 2–6 side holes (see table above). These are indicative only — every shaft is made to order. Send a 2D drawing or 3D model (STEP/IGES) and we will machine to your exact diameters, lengths and side-hole positions.
3. How are the side holes machined and controlled?
Side holes are cross-drilled on CNC equipment using jigs/fixtures that lock the hole position to your datum, held within ±0.05 mm. Every hole is then deburred and chamfered to prevent stress risers and ensure pins or set screws seat correctly. Hole diameter, position and depth are verified in our inspection report.
4. Can you work with other materials and add heat treatment or coatings?
Yes. In addition to carbon and alloy steel, we process stainless steel, brass, aluminum, titanium and engineering plastics. We can also add heat treatment (hardening, carburizing, induction hardening, nitriding) and surface finishing (zinc/nickel/chrome plating, black oxide, anodizing, polishing).
5. What is your MOQ, lead time, and how do I request a quote?
Low MOQ from 1 pc for prototypes with flexible volume pricing for production. Typical lead time is 5–10 working days for prototypes and 15–25 working days for mass production, depending on material and finishing. Send your drawing and quantity to receive a detailed quotation within 24 hours.
